Remote Communities

Remote Communities

The map below from the Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) August 2011 report on Remote Communities in Canada illustrates clearly the remote community landscape in Canada.  While this report narrowed the number of communities to 292, based on those who reported and other criteria, there are in fact in excess of 600 remote settlements with no electrical grid or piped natural gas network in Canada.

These communities are often characterized by limited infrastructure, poor living conditions, limited economic opportunities and an extremely high cost of living.
